Shoppers leave products in their bag for all sorts of reasons: a meeting, a bus stop, a second thought about the price. An abandoned cart notification is a polite reminder that brings them back to finish what they started. Because the shopper has already chosen a product, it is often the most valuable message an app can send.

How it works

  1. A shopper adds a product to their bag in your app.
  2. They leave without checking out.
  3. After a delay you choose, the app sends one notification.
  4. Tapping it opens their bag, ready for checkout.

If they check out in the meantime, nothing is sent.

When to send it

There is no single perfect delay, but some rules hold for most stores:

  • Not too soon. A message a few minutes later feels like surveillance. Give the shopper time to come back on their own.
  • Not too late. After a few days the moment has passed and the reminder lands cold.
  • Once is usually enough. A single, well-timed reminder keeps notifications welcome. If you add a second, make it different, for example a restock warning or free shipping.

A delay of a few hours suits most stores. Test what works for yours.

How to write it

Mention what they left

"Your bag is waiting" is fine. "The linen shirt is still in your bag" is better, because it reminds the shopper why they wanted it.

Lead with them, not you

The shopper already sees your app icon next to the message. Use the space for the reminder, not your brand name.

Hold the discount back

If every abandoned cart earns a discount, shoppers learn to wait for one. Start with a plain reminder and keep offers for the cases that need them.

Keep it short

Lock screens cut long text. Aim for a title of a few words and a single-sentence body.

Only use urgency such as "selling fast" when it is true. Shoppers notice, and trust is worth more than one sale.

Measure the right thing

Taps tell you the message was noticed. Recovered orders tell you it worked. Compare orders from shoppers who received the reminder with how many abandoned bags you had, and adjust the delay and wording from there.

In AppFromShop, abandoned cart is one switch in the dashboard's Push section. It sends once, opens the bag when tapped, and shows a live preview of the notification before you turn it on.

Frequently asked questions

Do abandoned cart notifications annoy shoppers?

Not when they are sent once, at a sensible time, and mention what the shopper left. Repeated or vague reminders are what lead people to turn notifications off.

Should I include a discount?

Start without one. A plain reminder is often enough, and automatic discounts teach shoppers to abandon their bag on purpose.

Does it work if the shopper isn't signed in?

Yes. The reminder is tied to the app on their phone, so it works for guests as long as they allowed notifications.

What is the difference from abandoned cart emails?

An email needs the shopper's address and has to win attention in an inbox. A push notification reaches app users directly on their lock screen, and a tap opens the bag in the app.
