When a shopper opens your app, the home screen has a second or two to answer one question: is there something here for me? A good home screen answers it before the first swipe. A cluttered one makes shoppers search, or leave.
Start with what changes
Your regular customers open the app to see what is new. Put the thing that changes most often at the top:
- a hero banner for your current campaign, drop or season
- new arrivals, if you add products every week
- a countdown if a launch or sale is coming up
If the top of the screen looks the same every time a customer opens the app, they stop looking.
Then help shoppers find their way
Right after the hero, give shoppers quick routes into the store:
- category tiles or circles for your main collections
- a search bar, if you have more than a few dozen products
- shop by price, colour or occasion if your catalogue is large
Keep labels short and use your customers' words, not internal names.
Prove it is worth buying
Lower on the screen, add the sections that build confidence:
- best sellers: social proof without saying so
- reviews from real customers
- your promise: shipping, returns, and anything that makes you different
A layout that works for most stores
| Position | Section | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hero banner | Shows what is new or on now |
| 2 | Categories | The fastest route to a product |
| 3 | New arrivals | Gives regulars a reason to scroll |
| 4 | Campaign or collection | Your second story of the week |
| 5 | Best sellers | Safe picks for new shoppers |
| 6 | Reviews or brand story | Builds trust |
Treat it as a starting point and change it for your store. A jewellery brand might lead with a single editorial image; a grocery store with quick re-order.
Design details that matter on a phone
Use your real photography
Shoppers can tell stock images from your own products. Your own photos, cropped well, always look better.
Leave space
Sections need room to breathe. Two strong sections beat five crowded ones.
Make every image tappable
If a banner shows a product or collection, a tap should open it. A banner that goes nowhere frustrates shoppers.
Check it in dark mode
Many shoppers use dark mode. Make sure your logo and banners still look right against a dark background.
Change it with the calendar
Your home screen should not look the same in December as in June. Plan seasonal versions for your big moments, such as sales, holidays and launches, and switch them on the day they start.
In AppFromShop you design the home screen with live blocks and see every change on your phone in about two seconds. Seasonal effects, like snow in December, can be scheduled to switch on and off by themselves.
